Hunting note

Start with the decision, then inspect the details.

Schoolhouse was acquired by Hudson Valley Lighting Group in February 2026 and the store has relaunched. Here is what the current specs, return terms and parts path mean for buyers.

Schoolhouse is worth it for a narrow group of buyers: people who want a specific, well-documented light fixture, live in the United States, and can accept a 30-day return window with an 18% fee. It is a harder yes for furniture and rugs, which the policy excludes from returns. Hudson Valley Lighting Group acquired the brand on 13 February 2026 and is relaunching it, so the question is not whether the old reputation still applies. It is whether today's catalog, terms, and stock justify today's price.

This guide uses manufacturer product pages and Schoolhouse's own policies, checked on 17 October 2026. It is not a hands-on test.

The quick answer

Buy Schoolhouse lighting if the exact silhouette solves a room problem and the published dimensions fit your wall. The Harlow Wall Sconce is $299 with a 5-inch width, a 4.5-inch extension, two E26 sockets, a 15-watt maximum, and a cUL Damp rating. Those are checkable numbers. In a bathroom or covered porch, the damp rating matters more than the brand story.

Be more careful with furniture and rugs: the refund policy makes them non-returnable, so you lose the usual safety net.

If you want the look for less, Cedar & Moss sells the Selene 5-inch sconce from $199 with a 45-day return window and a 4.5-watt LED included. Mitzi, part of the same parent group, sells a one-light Zinnia sconce for $200 with an ADA-compliant profile. They are real reference points, not identical substitutes.

What changed in 2026

Schoolhouse's FAQ states that HVLG acquired the company on 13 February 2026. HVLG describes itself as a family of lighting brands including Hudson Valley Lighting, Troy, Corbett, Mitzi, Sonneman, and CSL. That FAQ also says the Schoolhouse trade program moved into the HVLG program, and that customers with existing orders should email [email protected].

The about page says Schoolhouse was founded in 2003 and is entering "a new chapter in 2026 under Hudson Valley Lighting Group." The footer reads "© 2026, Troy-CSL Lighting, Inc." That explains why some listings look freshly published and why support now runs through a larger lighting group.

For buyers, Schoolhouse is now a brand inside a lighting manufacturer's portfolio, not only a design-led home store. That makes current fixture specifications more useful than historical brand impressions; the future furniture range remains less certain. The FAQ says lighting, decor, hardware, and bedding will continue with "some thoughtful refinements," but does not promise that every previous furniture piece returns.

What you get for the money: construction and specs

The strongest evidence is on the fixture pages, not in the brand copy. Each model below publishes dimensions, material, electrical rating, maximum wattage, bulb count, and socket type.

ModelPrice (17 Oct 2026)DimensionsExtensionMaterialRatingBulbs
Harlow Wall Sconce$2995.0" W × 10.5" H4.5"SteelcUL Damp2 × E26, 15W max

Cylinder Wall Sconce$1795.0" W × 7.5" H7.5"SteelcUL Damp1 × E26, 15W max
Cylinder Double Sconce$1995.0" W × 10.5" H4.25"BrasscUL Damp2 × E26, 15W max
Atwood Flush Mount$599 (black satin)19.75" W × 7.75" Hn/aSteel, oak, opal glasscUL Damp1 × E12, 10W max

Bulbs are not included; the pages state "Bulb Quantity (Not Included)" and list the socket type. Budget for two E26 lamps on the Harlow or one E12 candelabra bulb on the Atwood.

The Harlow is genuinely small at 5 inches wide. Its description says the scaled-down size is meant for installing in multiples in a kitchen or hallway, or for balanced bathroom light. A single Harlow may look sparse over a large vanity.

The Isaac is the more architectural piece: 6 inches wide, 14 inches of projection, adjustable swivels, and a cast-iron base. That extension sits well over a reading chair but will crowd a narrow hallway. If you are planning a hallway run, the hallway sconce guide covers spacing.

The Atwood is the outlier: a 19.75-inch flush mount mixing steel, an oak shade, and opal glass. It costs $599 in black satin and $699 in natural brass. Schoolhouse lists finishes as separate product pages, so the same silhouette can appear at different prices. Check the SKU before assuming a pricing error.

The three terms that decide value

Schoolhouse's refund policy is short, and three lines matter more than any design award.

The 30-day clock starts at the ship date, not delivery. Most items can be returned within 30 days of shipping if they are in original packaging, unassembled, and in new, undamaged condition. If a fixture ships slowly, part of that window is gone before the box arrives.

The return fee is 18% of order value. The policy says a return shipping fee equal to 18% of the order value is deducted from the refund. On a $499 Isaac, that is roughly $90 before original shipping; on a $299 Harlow, about $54. It belongs in your effective price comparison.

Furniture and rugs are not returnable at all. The non-returnable list includes furniture, rugs, gift cards, and final-sale items. That is the biggest reason to treat Schoolhouse furniture differently from its lighting. With a sconce, a return is expensive but possible. With a sofa or rug, the sale is final unless the item arrives damaged. Damage must be reported within 72 hours of delivery, with photos, to [email protected].

Shipping is US-only: the policy updated 14 October 2026 says Schoolhouse ships to the United States only. Costs are calculated at checkout by destination, weight, cart, and method; free shipping may appear on selected orders but is not a blanket promise.

Replacement parts follow the parent company's process. HVLG's FAQ says customers should work directly with the retailer they purchased the fixture through. For a Schoolhouse purchase, Schoolhouse support is the first stop, not a separate HVLG parts desk.

The exact-model comparison that matters

A fair comparison uses named products with published specs, not brand-level impressions.

The Selene is the closest like-for-like alternative to the Harlow in scale, and it is $100 cheaper at entry. It includes a 4.5-watt dimmable LED and a 45-day return window, though the customer pays return shipping; custom, installed, and clearance items are excluded. The trade-off is lead time: Cedar & Moss says one to two weeks. If you need a fixture this week, that matters more than the $100.

The Zinnia is taller and narrower, but a useful benchmark because Mitzi is also an HVLG brand. At $200 for the one-light version, with an ADA-compliant profile and a 15-watt E26 socket, it shows that the parent group's lower-priced lines can undercut Schoolhouse while sharing the same broader service structure. Treat it as a budget reference, not a substitute.

The Emma Globe is the middle option at $259, with a 5-inch ceramic body and a 4.5-watt LED included; its globe spreads light in a way that suits a powder room better than a long hallway.

For a bedside or reading light, the bedside lighting guide covers beam spread and shade height. For a living room, start with the living-room lighting guide. Schoolhouse's Isaac family also includes freestanding and tabletop models, but those are separate products and should be checked individually.

Where Schoolhouse wins, and where it does not

Schoolhouse wins on specification transparency. The fixture pages publish width, height, extension, material, electrical rating, maximum wattage, bulb count, and socket type. That is more than many decorative lighting retailers provide, and it makes honest comparison possible. The damp ratings are consistent across the models checked, and the Harlow's perforated steel, the Isaac's adjustable brass swivels, and the Atwood's oak-and-opal mix are specific design decisions rather than catalog filler.

It does not win on returns or furniture risk: an 18% deduction and a 30-day window from ship date are stricter than Cedar & Moss's 45-day window, and non-returnable furniture means you cannot order two options and return one. Stock is also uneven by finish: the Cylinder Wall Sconce in Paprika Satin was listed at $179 but unavailable on 17 October 2026, while the Cylinder Double in Industrial Yellow Gloss was available at $199.

How to buy safely right now

Start with the SKU, not the product name. Schoolhouse lists different finishes as separate product pages, and the Atwood family spans $599 and $699 depending on finish. Copy the SKU from the page you intend to buy and confirm finish, price, and availability at checkout.

Measure the extension before committing. The Harlow projects 4.5 inches; the Isaac projects 14. A 14-inch projection is a feature over a reading chair and an obstacle in a 36-inch hallway.

Check the rating against the room. All five fixtures above are cUL Damp rated, which covers bathrooms and covered outdoor areas. That does not make them suitable for direct rain exposure, and it does not replace local electrical code.

Budget for bulbs and dimming. None of the listed fixtures include bulbs. The Harlow takes two E26 bulbs and lists a 15-watt maximum; the Isaac takes one E26 at 10 watts; the Atwood takes one E12 candelabra at 10 watts. The pages do not state whether the fixtures are dimmable, so dimming depends on the bulb and wall dimmer.

Inspect on arrival and photograph everything. The damage window is 72 hours from delivery, and the return window runs from ship date. Keep the original packaging until you are sure you are keeping the fixture.

If you are comparing against a lookalike, the Restoration Hardware dupe guide shows where savings really come from. A cheaper fixture can be a good buy, but only if dimensions, rating, and return terms are comparable.

FAQ

Is Schoolhouse still in business?

Yes. HVLG acquired Schoolhouse on 13 February 2026 and is operating it. The site is live, and the FAQ describes a relaunch with continued lighting, decor, hardware, and bedding.

Is Schoolhouse good quality?

The published evidence supports a careful yes for these fixtures: steel and brass construction, cUL Damp ratings, published dimensions, and standard E26 sockets. That is not independent lab testing, and it does not prove brand-wide quality across furniture.

Can I return a Schoolhouse sofa or rug?

No. The refund policy lists furniture and rugs as non-returnable. Most other items can be returned within 30 days of the ship date if unassembled, in original packaging, and in new condition.

Is there a restocking or return fee?

Yes. A return shipping fee equal to 18% of the order value is deducted from the refund. Original shipping charges may also apply.

Are bulbs included, and who handles replacement parts?

Bulbs are not included. For parts, HVLG's FAQ says to work directly with the retailer you purchased through; for a Schoolhouse purchase, start with [email protected].
